Q: Do you think the government is making news about Toyota’s run away cars and Honda’s recall brakes?
For we could buy american cars and it could boost up the economy
A: No…the government is not making this stuff up. Turns out that the almighty Toyota and Honda can eff up too. Just like everyone else. And people can buy cars from many different countries and most all produce cars right here in the US anyway.
Q: Question about 2010 Honda Fit Sport Brakes?
My hubby and I just got a 2010 Honda Fit Sport in February 2010. Great vehicle, except the brakes are insanely loud. Keep in mind we both have mechanic experience (our fathers), but not on Hondas. Anywho we took it in yesterday, and they said there was no issue, and they fixed the “squeak”. On the way home the car was crazy loud still when we braked, and now we are seeing online that Fits are being recalled due to brake issues. We have a warranty with Honda and such, but we are concerned we made the wrong decision on the vehicle. Any one else have the same issue?
A: A lot of cars have some issues when they are brand new to the market. If you feel you don’t like the car, take it back. But if you like the car, and the only issue are the brakes, take it in to Honda for the recall, and keep it. Fixing the car if it has been recalled should be free, plus you still have a warranty for it.
Q: 06 Honda Civic squeaky brakes after oil change today, tech says “it’s normal, nothing he can do” WTF!?
I have a 2006 Honda Civic which was purchased brand new and has around 26,000 miles. I took it to a honda service center (it’s a certified center, the dealership that was previously there relocated but they kept the service center there because of mass amounts of hondas in my area). Anyways I got my oil changed as well as a recall on the brakes (doesn’t apply to me, it’s cold weather and i’m in florida). Anyways I leave, head to work and my brakes squeak the entire way there. This continues on for the entire day so i call back and he kindly says bring it back we took the tires off for the recall and there may be some dirt. I bring it back and they bring me back to show me. Says that this is a new type of brakes on newer cars since the government switched regulations. anyways he says there is rust which is normal since my wheel is exposed. says the rust is rubbing and making the squeal. goes on to say that this is normal and happens on foreign cars, including mercedes. offers no fix!!
he says he can refinish them at my cost but it takes an hour and a half and they can’t guarantee it won’t squeak the next day. wtf if this was “normal” then why don’t all cars do it? it’s brand new, is this normal? i called another dealership who said this is NOT normal and offered me to bring it in. how should i handle this situation?

it was purchased brand new, and now has 26,000 miles on it. warranty on brakes is 3-5 years for hondas
A: Your car is not brand new, you have 26k on it, brakes are not covered under the warranty, brake pads anyways. Why dont you do what they suggest and pay to fix it, or is it you just want a free fix with that many miles?
Q: Brakes wearing down too quickly on your 2006 honda civic? Tell me what to do. Taking it to dealer soon.?
The brakes on my civic are starting to make a grinding noise after 30000km. I’ve googled the problem and there are enough web entries to make me wonder when the recall is coming. The brake shoes are wearing down too quickly according to the web results.
(just another way for the car companies to make money?)
A: Try buying brake pads from your local auto parts store. They should have regular $50 brake pads to high performance brake pads that should last longer for you.
If you can manage to lift the front side of your car, remove your wheel, and have socket wrenches, you can replace them yourself for free. Otherwise, see if your dealer can install them for you at a discount.
Another way for them to make money? It can sure help increase business revenue especially under a difficult economy.
Good luck!
Q: 06 Honda Civic Squeaky Brakes, is the tech to blame?!?
My 06 Honda Civic was bought new and now has 26,000 miles on it and no issues thus far. It was due for an oil change so I took it to a local honda repair-shop. This shop is teamed with a dealership but the dealership moved to a new location. The oil was changed and also a recall was checked out. I leave and the entire way to work my brakes squeak and for the rest of the day. I bring it back, they offer to take it back and then bring me back to see. He says these are new kinds of brakes since asbestos was outlawed. It says there is rust and because the metal is rubbing together it is causing the squeal. I continued that it drives me crazy and I want it fixed. He says it happens all the time and there is no fix for it. Says they can resurface but not guarantee it won’t happen the next day. Says brakes squeal on mercedes “all” the time. What’s going on?! This can’t be normal, it’s brand new and no other civics are doing it. What should i do, I want them to know they’re in the wrong.
A: Your description is somewhat confusing so a few answers to a few questions would help–
1) did the brakes squeek before your took you car into the shop?
2) did they change the brake pads when the car was in the shop as part of the recall or during the service?
3) if they did change the brake pads, what brand of brake pads did they put on?
4) do the brakes squeel all the time or just in the morning or after the car has been sitting a long time?
5) where was the rust? Is it on the rotor?
the statement that ‘they all do it’ and that the composition of the brake pads is responsible for it is inaccurate. They don’t all do it and if rust is responsible the noise would go away after the first time you applied the brakes and scrubbed the rust off the rotors with the brake pads. Go to any Honda dealer and look at the new cars on the lot–they all have surface rust on the rotors yet if you take one off the lot for a road test I guarantee you won’t hear a brake squeek from the car with the rusted rotors.
DO NOT LET THEM MACHINE THE ROTORS!!!!! You’ve only got 26k on the car and machining the rotors will significantly shorten the life of the rotors. Machining the rotors is no “cure” for a squeeling noise, its only done to minimize vibration when braking.
Any additional information you can provide would be helpful
Q: How do you turn off the abs warning light on a 94 honda accord?
My girlfriends 94 accord has had this yellow abs ligh on now for almost three years. We know the abs is not functioning, we don’t need to be consistantly reminded. Is there a way to disable the light? I recall reading somewhere about a fuse you could pull or something along those lines.
****FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW, EVEN WITHOUT ABS THE BRAKES STILL WORK AS THEY SHOULD. THEY JUST DON”T HAVE ABS. IT IS NOT DANGEROUS—-PLEASE THINK BEFORE YOU ANSWER****
A: disconnect the battery, it should go off
Q: i was thinkin of buying toyota but gas pedal problems, push me to choose another japanese car company. Which 1?
toyota has massive recall of gas pedal failure, then nissan made recall for faulty brake pedal and gas tank gauge. Also honda made recall for defective airbags.
So now i’m thinking of going for subaru. subaru doesn’t have any recall or any gas pedal or brake pedal issue, right?
A: Toyota is okay just wait for the 2010 models. If not I would reccomend Subaru. They have AWD standard and are everything you need in a car. Other than that Honda, Nissan, Land Rover, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, VW, BMW, Infiniti, Lexus and Acura are okay
Q: 2008 Honda Civic Brake Failure?
I need feedback from other consumers whom had the breaks fail in their 2008 Honda civic. I did some research online and it appears there was a recall in Europe but not in America and im trying to build a case. You contact me via e-mail if you don’t want to post it publicly.
my car only had 8000 miles on it
A: There was a recall on some 2007’s for the same reason… (in Canada anyways)
Luckily mine wasn’t one of them!
Q: honda civic 2001 cruise control not working, what is wrong with it?
ok i recently bought a 2001 honda civic lx 4 door, everything is fine with it except my cruise control, i press the button labeled “cruise control” next to the steering wheel on the left side a little lower closer to the brakes, the light on the dash which if i recall correctly is right above the fuel gauge also lights up saying cruise control, then i accelerate to the speed i want and press set, and nothing, i end up decelerating and not remaining at the speed i desire. what can be the problem?
thanks
A: might be a bad brake switch. when you arm and set your cruise control and then touch your brakes it shuts the system down, same way with the clutch pedal if your car is a manual transmission. driving with your foot resting on the brake pedal will often times keep you from sitting your cruise control and also if the car has a remote start. A remote start system can mess with braking and clutch sensor and trick the car to thinking they are always on and in-turn keeping your cruise control from working.

A: Tell him you want new front rotors and pads, a full tank of gas and one of those pine tree air fresheners.
Q: 2010 Honda Insight VS 2010 Toyota Prius?
I am 17 and as an early graduation present, my parents have agreed to buy me a car. (I attend high school and college at the same time, because of this program I’m in, so please, no one give me mouth about getting a brand new car!)
After I’m done with my community college/high school here, I should receive an AA degree and transfer to a 4-year university. This means I will be away from home and will be driving back and forth a lot, which is one of the reasons why I chose these two hybrid cars.
Both cars look promising, but I’m not sure which one would be best suited for myself. I originally wanted a Prius, but after hearing about the recalls and problems a lot of people have, I’ve been having second thoughts. Things like the brake messing up and problems with the gear shift changing on its own. Plus, a bare-boned Prius comes to about the same price as a fully-loaded Honda Insight.
I checked for problems with the 2010 Insight, but haven’t found many common that should raise any concerns. The Insight is a little bit more compact than the Prius, and I heard was much slower. (but speed isn’t too important to me anyway.)
Both cars seem to have it’s perks and downfalls, but I really cannot decide between them. Which car do you think is a better buy?
I want a car that is fuel-efficient, keeps me safe, and is easy to maneuver. Out of the two, which is better for those needs?
Please no bad mouthing and rude answers. Thank you!
A: The only braking problems that Prius ever had were:
A. If you put in additional floor mats on top of the originals it could get stuck in the accelerator pedal. Even that isn’t a big problem because the Prius (unlike non-hybrid Toyotas) has brake override which stops the acceleration when you firmly press on the brakes.
B. Brake feel. Because hybrids use a combination of regenerative, friction braking, and traction control, it’s possible in certain conditions to feel the transition and to have to adjust your foot pressure on the brakes. Some people complain about this in the same way that people complained about power brakes when they first came out (a number of cars were returned then too but the media and lawyers weren’t as rabid as they are today so there wasn’t the big deal there is now).
The braking problems, other than the floor mats (and cars have been getting floor mats stuck in the pedals ever since there have been floor mats) and pedal feel are:
1. Misidentification with Toyota’s non-hybrid cars. (Many people think that the CHP officer and his family were in a Prius, but they were in a non-hybrid, stupidly overpowered, rental Lexus that may have had mechanical problems before they rented it)
2. Hoaxes (some people with financial problems have claimed problems to get out of paying).
3. Driver error (stepping on the accelerator when they thought they were stepping on the brake).
The Prius has four braking systems:
1. Regenerative.
2. Friction.
3. Engine.
4. Parking.
There is also brake-assist which determines if you are in an emergency stop and supplies extra power to the brakes (a kind of panic mode). You have to really try hard to not be able to stop a Prius.
I don’t know where you got the gear shift changing on it’s own from. This can’t happen because the Prius never changes gears. Heck, it never even goes out of gear. The drive train in the Prius is composed of a simple planetary gear system similar to a differential. Reverse is electric.
A technical look at the “problems” is here: http://www.techno-fandom.org/~hobbit/cars/storm.html
Note that the Insight is in it’s first year of sale so the problems that it might have aren’t known. The older Insight was a totally different car. The Prius was on sale in North America from 2000 to 2010 before any “problems” occurred. Interestingly the “problems” happened during the year the government took over a car company.
- I want a car that is fuel-efficient, keeps me safe, and is easy to maneuver. Out of the two, which is better for those needs?
IMHO, it’s the Prius.
1. It’s more fuel efficient than the Honda.
2. It has advanced safety features such as brake-override, brake-assist, vehicle stability control (vehicle stability control is a system that keeps you from doing doughnuts in slippery conditions if you are going anything like a reasonable speed for the conditiions). Optionally there is radar pre-collision, radar cruise control, and even self-parking.
3. It’s a mid-sized car. There is room for four full-sized adults or you can put a bicycle or two in the back without taking their rear wheels off.
4. It scores four or five star in every crash test category.
5. Toyota has replaced many of the mechanical components with more reliable electronics. For instance there is no alternator, no starter motor, no clutch or fluid coupling (a fluid coupling is the automatic transmission equivalent of a clutch), and the automatic transmission with its hundreds of parts has been replaced with a simple planetary gear system similar to a differential.
6. It has a very high owner satisfaction rating.
I have two, a 2001 and a 2004. They have been trouble free (the media hype notwithstanding) and among the best cars I’ve ever had. It would be really hard for me or my wife to go back to old fashioned cars. The 2004 has 108,000 miles and a lifetime average of 56 mpg according to the logbook that I keep. By year the average mpg for the six complete years has been: 50.8, 52.6, 56.3, 57.3, 59.9, 61.4.
UPDATE:
FWIW, I pay about $420 for 6 months for two Prius through Progressive. It’s hard to get cheaper than that for any car. I’m sure there’s some insurance companies that charge more.
Q: Can a warped rotor make your SRS light come on?
I drive a 2000 Honda Accord EX-V6 Coupe. My front brake rotors are warped, but I haven’t taken it in to fix it yet (don’t drive much). This seems like a likely cause, BUT I have read about the SRS recall and would like to know if it is a possibility.
A: your srs light is your airbag light (supplemental restraint system) which only the dealer can fix. driving with warped rotors can lead to other problems (wheel bearings, ball joints, stabilizer links, uneven tire wear) so it’s recommended to get that fixed as soon as possible. but to answer your question, no, the two problems are completely unrelated
Q: Honda ‘06 Civic Sensor O-Ring recall notice?
Last week, I got a notice from Honda informing me to take it to a dealer for an examination of seals on the real wheels. The anti-lock brake sensor seal o-rings could have been damaged, leading to moisture damage.
Got it to the shop Monday. There was no damage to either wheel sensor.
Anyone else here get the letter and/or had their ABS sensors examined? Anyone find any damaged o-rings?
A: this is what the Honda bulletin says on this condition. the o-ring is very easy to inspect to determine if the sensor was improperly installed at the factory.
During assembly, some wheel speed sensors may
have been improperly installed and do not seal the hub
assembly. Water may enter the hub assembly and
damage the wheel bearing. In areas where road salt is
used, the wheel bearings may corrode, which may
cause the wheel to separate and fall off, increasing the
risk of a crash.
the recall does not require a good o-ring to be replaced. if the o-ring is damaged it will at a minimum require the replacement of the wheel speed sensor and possibly the rear hub.
dealers do not have any incentive to not make required repairs. if they were to not repair a car that required a recall repair they are open to tremendous liability. plus, honda pays them well to do the repairs if they are required.
i would imagine that the percent of vehicles that require a repair is extremely low.
hope that helps
Q: Where is my 2005 Accord EX V6 vibration coming from?
Ok, so for starters this is NOT your typical “Oh, its a brake problem” or “Oh, you need a wheel balance” vibration – kinda tired of seeing those posts with only those solutions.
My car has several mechanics stumped: Honda dealer, Sears, and another auto shop all can’t figure it out.
So, of course we did the obvious least expensive fixes first: balance, alignment, changed tires (twice), and checked rims – they are not bent. Then used a device called “chassis ears” which were kind of fun to drive the car with while listening to different parts of the car – but no sound changes when hooked up near the brakes and motor mounts and another part – I forget what it was called “lower….something”
Decided to change anyway all the brake pads and rotors and then front axles.
Still, vibration.
Tired and worn out from this. Looked up recalls on 05 Honda Accords and there’s several but I don’t see how any of them would cause the vibration. There’s also no indication of body work from the previous owner (bought from dealer who received the car after a lease was up).
I’ve heard that automatic transmissions sometimes have these vibrations and the whole thing would need to be changed out if that is the case or it could be the “harmonic stabilizer” that’s attached to the camshaft. But that hasn’t been decided to explore those 2 yet to see if they are the problem. I guess it’s a little more expensive to do that.
Oh, and another thing, the vibration comes on stronger with colder outside temperatures (but still is present when it’s warm out but less pronounced).
And also, lubing up the metal holders for the brakes (these metal holders clip onto the brakes which clip onto the calipers) helped out too, but only for a half day on a warm day too- so that’s why I still thought the brakes might be a problem and changed them out.
Thinking of just trading in for something else, maybe BMW, Lexus, Ford, Mercury or something.
Would I tell the dealer that there’s a vibration? Kind of feel I should but….?
Maybe just go back to the original dealer (Herb Chambers) and trade in for one of their cars but I didn’t like my auto purchasing experience there with this Honda and don’t want to go back to any of them.
Any thoughts on any of this?
Ok, so here’s some additional details:
This vibration is a vibration – not a noise, it starts to occur at 25mph when I first start in the morning. It stays with the vehicle no matter what speed after that (ie, if I stop at a stop light it will be felt when I accelerate to go) and it DOES increase while pressing on the gas pedal (accelerating). It’s felt in the cab/chassis/seat of the car. It can be felt in the steering wheel if the speed is high enough, like 65, but subtle, then increases in the steering wheel too with higher speeds. Doesn’t matter what type of incline/decline in the road, even in neutral coasting down a hill but it’s less noticeable. It sometimes is more noticeable when going around a corner – with and without accelerating.
AND as stated before it is felt with any temperature, but especially with colder temperatures.
That’s all to add for now.
A: You need to start with a better description of what the vibration is that you are trying to fix.
1) does the vibration only happen when the car is in motion or do you feel it at stops as well?
2) if only when the car is in motion, at what vehicle speed does the vibration start to come in?
3) at what engine speed does the vibration start to come in?
4) what gear is the transmission in?
5) does the vibration change with vehicle speed, engine speed, or transmission gearing?
6) is the vibration felt on turns, straights, uphills, downhills, or under all conditions at the threshold speed?
7) where do you feel the vibrati0on? In the seats? In the steering wheel? in the accelerator or brake pedal?
does the vibration go away when coasting in neutral?
9) is the vibration felt on transmission shifts, or before, or after the transmission shifts? does the intensity change?
10) what is the engine temperature when the vibration occurs? cold, hot or at all temperatures?
11) has the dealer determined the order of the vibration? do they know the resonance of the vibration in Hertz? do they know the amplitude?
12) is there an audible noise with the vibration or is the vibration just felt?
these are only a few of the questions that you need to provide data on before you can expect anyone to narrow down the possibilities. the more information you give the better the chance you have of someone isolating the vibration.
hope that helps.
Q: Car shuts off while braking?
I have 1999 Honda Accord LX. At one point and time my car would shut off in mid drive. I took it to a mechanic, and found out that irt was the ignition switch which was under recall. I got that fixed, and now the car still stops, but only when I apply my brakes. I have taken it to multiple mechanics, nothing is showing up on the diagnostic tests. I was told that it could be the fuel pump, but still nothing shows up on the diagnostics.Could it be the fuel pump, and if not, what else could it be? When the car stops, all the lights on the dash come on, but the radio still plays. Once I turn the car all the way off and put it in park, the car starts right back up with no problems.
A: Sounds like to me there is a security feature that may be malfunctioning. Or there is a short in the charging system on the car.
